Program shows youngsters how to stay safe

The Germantown Safety City program attracted 128 5- and 6-year-old children to the Germantown Church of Christ on June 14 to 18. The program, which is sponsored by the Germantown Safety Committee, is designed to teach children the importance of staying safe.

Some of the key lessons for the children were to remember to wear helmets while bike riding and the importance of crossing streets carefully. Other lessons centered on how to dial 911, what to do in case of a fire and importance of using life vests while boating. A new element this year was a lesson on what do if a child gets lost in the woods.

The program targets children who will be entering Kindergarten and the first grade because these are youngsters who will be riding a school bus for the first time and crossing streets for the first time by themselves.

Sponsored by the Germantown Public Safety Education Committee, the week-long program had the support of local businesses as well as many volunteers from area high schools and middle schools.
